​PRESENTATION NIGHT

In this week of remembrance, and ahead of our home match with Littlehampton that falls on Armistice Day, we have been looking into our village's history, specifically in connection to The Great War and we have learnt about the 24 men that gave their lives in that conflict.

​Below are details (in alphabetical order) of the second dozen who made the ultimate sacrifice, with the first dozen published HERE

Donald James Herbert GREGORY

Private 5554,
1st Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment. 6th Division. Regular soldier. Killed in action 20th October 1914. Aged 37
Son of George Rowland and Emily Frances Gregory of Leytonstone. Born in Bulmer, Yorkshire and enlisted in Stratford, East London. No apparent connection with Loxwood.(Possibility only)
​Commemorated on The Ploegsteert Memorial Belgium MR.32

Albert GRINSTEAD

Private TF/252603,
9th Battalion, Essex Regiment. 12th Division
Killed in action during the March Retreat 27th March 1918.
Born in Rudgwick and enlisted in Petworth.
​Formerly with the Royal Sussex. (G/2185)
Commemorated on The Pozieres Memorial MR.27


Charles Edward KETCHER

Private G/2756,
8th (Pioneer) Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. 18th Division.
Died of wounds 19th September 1916. Aged 24.
Son of William and Sarah Anne Ketcher of Loxwood. Born in Loxwood and enlisted in Petworth
Buried in Puchevillers British Cemetery F. 74

William OVERINGTON

Private 36360,
8th Battalion, East Surrey Regiment. 18th Division.
Died in captivity in Germany 24th August 1918.
Born in Hassocks and enlisted in Guildford
​Buried in Berlin South West Cemetery, Germany.

Walter Henry PACKHAM

Private TF/302245,
10th Battalion, Essex Regiment. 18th Division.
Died of wounds 20th August 1918. Aged 19.
Son of Raymond and Mary Jane Packham of Blackbridge Lane.
Born in Hove and enlisted in Horsham Formerly with the Royal Sussex (G/3753)

Cecil Raymond Abert PACKHAM

Able Seaman J/19959/PO,
H.M.S. “Queen Mary”, Royal Navy.
​Lost with the Battlecruiser at the Battle of Jutland 31st May 1916. Commemorated on The Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Southsea. MR. 3.

George Hamilton POWELL

Private 75918,
Tank Corps.
Killed in action at the Third Battle of Ypres 31st July 1917. Aged 22.
Son of Richard and Anne Elizabeth Powell of 10, Star Cottages, Chipstead, Surrey.
Born in Loxwood and enlisted in Horsham Formerly with the Royal Sussex. (G/1864)

James PUTTOCK

Private G/6658,
9th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. 24th Division.
Died of wounds. 28th June 1917.
Born in Wisborough Green and enlisted in Horsham.
Included on Billingshurst W.M.
Commemorated on The Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium MR. 29


John PUTTOCK

2nd Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment.
Died at home 4th July 1916.
Born and enlisted in Horsham. Next of kin, Loxwood.
​Buried in St. John The Baptist Churchyard, Loxwood.

Frank PUTTOCK

Private G/6225
9th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. 24th Division.
Killed in action during the crossing of the River Sambre 4th November 1918.
Son of Mr and Mrs J. Puttock of Gunshot Common, Loxwood. Born in Loxwood and enlisted in Horsham.

Percy SOPP

Boy 1st Class J/25189/PO,
HMS “Bulwark”, Royal Navy.
Lost when the Battleship blew up off Sheerness 26th November 1914. Aged 17.
Son of James and Constance Sopp of Round Street. Horsham formerly of Loxwood.
​Commemorated on The Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Southsea. MR.3.

Charles STOTE

Private 27700,
9th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. 18th Division.
​Died of wounds in base hospital at Rouen 27th May 1918. Age 21.
Son of Charles and Laura Stote of Lakers Lodge Cottages, Loxwood. Born in Elstead, Surrey, and enlisted in Horsham.
​Buried in St. Sever Cemetery Extension F. 146

We will hold a minute's silence just before kick off on Saturday to enable us to consider and show respect to all those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in the pursuit of freedom and we ask that if you are attending the match that you respect the right of others to partake in that moment.

​All of the Club's players and Management Team will have poppies adhered to their match kit on the day.
